Chuck D. Calls Out Jay-Z and Kanye West for Materialism During Economic Hardship

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University – Scholarship in Action

I met the rapper Chuck D at the Measuring the Movement forum, hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton.  I sat next to Chuck for a good 30 minutes during the panel discussion and got to appreciate his humility and intelligence as it pertains to the plight of black people.  What I also noticed was that Chuck stands a far cry away from his peers regarding whether or not they give a damn about the people who are buying their albums.

I understabd what Chuck is saying but JZ and Kanye West music isnt just for black people. There is people of all races buy their music. These guys are doing what they know to do to survive and make money and that is rapping. Black people needs to stop hating on others that is successful in life. We are always trying to voice our opinion on others but never ourselves do a darn thing to help one another. Ask Chuck has he gave any of his money for anything. These guys has the right to spend their money as they please. You dont hear white people getting upset at how many lives in Hollywood in thier big mansions.

hey claudia the problem is not enough artists are speaking out against this bullshit that is being put out. its not hating its a very real issue, Chuck didnt say “fuck them niggas they got money and i dont” chuck said basically they need to keep in mind that the community they come from is struggling and they should be aware of that. the problem w/ black people is that we are too afraid to speak out on whats on our minds cuz somebody gonna call them a hater. and to clarify white people do that shit all the time. but also white people dont glorify materialism like we do. and on top of that when we as black people make up 99% of the rappers out the music is for black people. i dont hear white radio stations playing hip hop…stations play this music to get us to go out and buy things we got no business buying. thats why we got black people living in the projects w/ thousands of dollars of clothes and expensive cars w/ big rims but no money in the bank. no property. thats why young black men w/o a career have a mouth full of glod teeth. everybody is benefiting from our materialistic attitude except us. i feel chuck cuz im worried about my people not them other people. and for the record chuck has given money and time the thing is chuck d doesnt do it for the cameras so everybody can say “hey i saw chuck d on tv dong good” its not about publicity. i have seen chuck d at rallys for oscar grant and sean bell…where was jay z and kanye?
